Equipment

So you’ve seen the who, what and why but so far we haven’t covered the biggest question of HOW.

HOW do you set about paddling a kayak around the UK?

Well, the first thing you need is a good boat and thanks to Nigel Dennis and the lads at Sea Kayaking UK in Anglesey. I’ve got just that. For this trip I’ll be using a 17ft Explorer sea kayak. This is a boat that has been tried and tested in some of the most demanding environments throughout the world. It can handle most conditions and has the carrying capacity needed for all my gear.

Along with the boat I’ll be carrying all the usual paddling kit to handle as many different conditions as possible. To get round before the winter closes in I’ll need to be able to paddle on marginal days. Standard equipment is a dry cagoul, buoyancy aid and a helmet carried in easy access for surf landings.
